São Luís is the capital city of Maranhão and was named
a World Heritage Site by Unesco because of its unique
architectural design of the buildings, some of which are
undergoing restoration.
São Luís is on an island and was founded by a French
explorer, and occupied by the Dutch for a short period in
history. This adds a multicultural aspect to the city, but the
Portuguese influence is mostly apparent.
The historical
center is best explored by strolling along the cobblestone
streets. Passing by the many centennial manor houses
with their Portuguese tile fronts, is a journey into the past.
Every street has a story to tell, either about an important
individual or a mythical character.
Historically, São Luís was an important economical port
city, and many African slaves were brought here.
Therefore, São Luis also has a rich Afro-Brazilian culture,
evident in the music and food.
