Imagine blankets (lençõis) of fine white sand covering
the earth, rising to form dunes that reach up to heights of
40 meters, and the low lands filling with rainwater, creating
a desert with oases. This is Lençõis Maranhenses.
The oases provide irresistible photo opportunities of
the lagoons formed by the rains from January to July, and
range in color from turquoise blue to crystal clear,
contrasting with the rippling white sands that meet their
edges. The fresh waters beckon you to refresh with a dip
before you carry on your journey.
Barreirinha is a small, interior village situated on the
Pregiça River and provides a simple infrastructure for
tourists. The river provides a source of livelihood and
recreation for the local people. Boat rides can be taken
along the river.
